I am a Canadian author who grew up on the most profound fantasy novel of all time, The Lord of the Rings. A few years ago, I decided to quit law and write fantasy novels for kids aged nine to ninety. I am fanatical about promoting literacy. I believe doctors should send newborn babies home from the hospital with their tiny fists clutching their first book. I believe literacy affects every aspect of society. "Read, and understand" is my slogan. I visit hundreds of schools with that message.
My stories represent a lot of my own feelings about the state of our world, about our fears and our struggles to keep things balanced amidst ever increasing craziness. I believe in using literature to elevate humankind to our highest potential, to encourage kids to take responsibility for their actions, to show them that it’s OK to fail because self-confidence doesn’t come from winning all the time. It develops from failing and trying again and again and again. I use magic as a powerful metaphor for inner strength. My stories are dark and sad. I hope they empower our kids; I hope they reflect the true spirit of a human "quest" for knowledge, courage, and basic decency.
